Always on the safe side: our fire protection department
No technology is so perfect, nor are humans so careful or experienced to be able to fully eliminate the risk of a malfunction
or incident. This is why precautions are taken, in case something does happen. In order to minimize the impact of a potential
incident, Merck has a fire protection department at the Darmstadt site with a round 140 full-time staff.
All incidents can generally be brought under control by our own staff. Nevertheless, the department holds emergency response
drills annually together with the public emergency management authorities.
Should an emergency arise, damage control measures are carried out immediately. The fire department, the police, the disaster
control unit and the supervisory authorities are informed immediately. Merck, in turn, is on hand to help in the event of
external incidents. TUIS (German Transport Accident Information and Emergency Response System – a voluntary system of the
fire departments in the chemical industry) may call Merck’s fire protection department to road accidents involving the transport
of chemicals.
